Ability through Drumming - Volunteers Needed!

Aug 23rd
8:30am - 12:00pm
1344 Commissioners Rd W, London, ON N6K 1E1

“Ability through Drumming” is a free music education program for children with developmental and physical disabilities, presented through El Sistema South London. The program will run weekly throughout the year. It will be held on Tuesday evenings in the parish hall of St. Anne’s Church Byron and it will attract children from across the London area. The program will run for 12 weeks in the fall and 12 weeks in the winter, from 5:00pm until 7:30pm. The program will be directed by Marg Wolsley, a retired secondary music educator with extensive experience in developmental education. There is a great need for volunteers to work with the children, one on one and sometimes two on one depending on the specific disability of the child. These volunteers will have to be special people, able to be sensitive to the needs of very vulnerable children. They will need to be confident enough to be comfortable being directed and guided in their work. The volunteers must be open to creating a close bond with a child who may find it very difficult to relate to other people. The volunteer will be a co-student with the child and so no music experience is necessary.

Volunteers will receive training and be matched with a student in August once the children and their families have been interviewed.

Volunteers must commit to supporting the full 12-week session and must attend all sessions to support their student.

To be considered for this volunteer role, please submit a letter of interest by Friday August 23, 2019 at 12:00 pm to Megan Dykstra, Coordinator, Career Development at megan.dykstra@huron.uwo.ca
